~The German counter-attack was so effective that on December 3rd, Haig gave the order for the British units to withdraw. ~Attacking by complete surprise on November 20, the British tanks ripped through German defenses and took 7,500 prisoners in casualties. Bad weather intervened, so that the cavalry could not exploit the breakthrough.
